ARTS | ‘The Contract’ Is Out On International Playwright

Playwright Sean McIntyre announces the release of his new script for the stage: ‘The Contract’. Against the backdrop of its biggest ever project, McIntyre explores the implosion of a construction company through shifting alliances, fracturing friendships and the unrelenting pressure of boardroom politics.

‘The Contract’ is a new play from international playwright Sean McIntyre that tracks a company wilting under the pressures of a large-scale project. Set to be the city’s new landmark, Eastern Metropol Train Station merely serves as a catalyst for corporate and political disaster.

Friendships fracture. Fingers point. Accusations fly. Alliances shift. Spin and counter-spin. It's every man and woman for themselves.

Playwright Sean McIntyre says he was drawn to the story by theme’s of corruption and interpersonal relationships at executive level. Added to that was the bonus that it was based on an anecdote about a high-profile construction project in his home town of Melbourne, Australia.

“As soon as I heard this yarn, I could see the conflict between various characters unfolding into a stage play immediately. It jumped into my head and refused to budge. “

“I think everybody can relate to a story like this,” said Sean McIntyre. “The machinations of politics and industry may play out in the media, but you never really know the truth of what goes on behind closed doors.”

McIntyre says it didn’t bother him that he knew next to nothing about the construction industry.
“I was more interested in the exploring the working relationships of the characters and playing with the idea of how each might deal with or be affected by the events unfolding around them.”

“I’ve experienced corporate fall-out first hand myself and thought it would be intriguing to try and fuse some of that experience into a sector I have no working knowledge of.”

Sean McIntyre ‘s script is also an acute observation of how people react under pressure when mother nature plays up.

“Human nature being what it is, we seem to think that with all our technology we have the ability to plan and control everything around us. Of course we don’t and it’s interesting to watch how society reacts when the forces of nature circumvent every best laid plan.”
