ARTS | 'A Kind of Destiny' Beckons International Playwright

On the eve of his impending travel to Oxford University, international Melbourne-based playwright Sean McIntyre announces the release of his new script for the stage: 'A Kind of Destiny'.

In April 2010, Sean was accepted into UK's prestigious Oxford University where he will study Creative Writing at Exeter College.

With Oxford beckoning, Sean McIntyre has released a new play that presents a tantalising confrontation between The Son of God and the Man condemned to Betray Him.

Set in a garden somewhere, Judas argues with Christ showing him up to be a manipulative user of people for his own ends. Yet if Judas doesn't choose this destiny, what destiny will be his to become?

Playwright Sean McIntyre says he was drawn to the story by a 2006 news report about the discovery of a ‘lost gospel' written by Judas.

"It set me thinking about some of my favourite topics and theme's," says Sean McIntyre. "For any individual, there's no bigger theme in life than the one everyone confronts sooner all later - 'what is my purpose in life?"

McIntyre says that although his piece has an obvious grounding in the Christian faith given its setting, it's far from a purely religiouos piece that sets out to 'preach' to any audience.

"It's actually me trying to enter into a conversation with the audience and hopefully for them, it's an intelligent one," says Sean McIntyre. "Themes that revolve around destiny, pre-destination, eternity, life after death and above all - purpose - everyone is touched by these and is sure to have an opinion on them."

'A Kind of Destiny' is about to enjoy a life of its own via a ‘staged reading’ format at Theatre Works, a venue rich from 30 years experience in presenting innovative theatre on Saturday 17th July 2010 at 1pm.

Directing ‘A Kind of Destiny’ will be Mick Lo Monaco (The Cup, Seven of Hearts).
