The exercises in the FICTION class are providing some useful tools into generating really authentic material.
Subject of much discussion this week has been on the effectiveness of the exercises. We are all finding that we are seeing great material on our pages as we respond to the writing exercises.
For example, we had to write a piece about a fight. Then we stopped and we asked to write the same story but from the view of an unreliable witness to the fight. Then again we stopped and we were asked to pick a narrator who wasn't even present at the fight but was talking about it.
From this I have a script for a 10 minute maybe one act play and it already clicks.
Another exercise had us writing dialogue for a couple that were arguing. The stipulation being that one person wanted to break up, the other didn't. Naturally I have put my characters through the wringer.
